About Mahjong Games

When was Mahjong invented?

The exact origin of Mahjong is unknown. The inventor and exact dates it was invented are contested to this day. We do know, however, it probably began in the late 1800s in China and that this tile matching game has become a worldwide phenomenon. We offer Mahjong lovers a slew of different options and ways to play this classic but enduring game.

How many tiles does Mahjong use?

A typical Mahjong set has 152 tiles, though that number can vary depending on the edition or version of Mahjong you play.
You have four basic groups of tiles with types within those:

Suits (108 tiles - 3 types)
- Circles or Dots (36 tiles - 4 of each)
- Bamboos or Bams (36 tiles - 4 of each)
- Characters or Craks (36 tiles - 4 of each)

Honors (28 tiles - 2 types)
- Winds (16 tiles - 4 of each)
- Dragons (12 tiles - 4 of each)

Flowers and Seasons (8 tiles - 2 types)
- Flowers (4 tiles - 1 of each)
- Seasons (4 tiles - 1 of each)

Wilds or Jokers (8 tiles - all the same)

What are basic strategy types for Mahjong?

Here are 4 of the most basic Mahjong strategies you can keep in mind while playing:

Play intentionally - always have an underlying strategy or tactic based on what you have, what's on the board, and the direction of the game.

Don't be afraid to shift strategies - chances are the game will evolve in unexpected ways, when that happens, evolve with it and update your planning.

Avoid the first discard - taking the first discard reveals your hand, so unless you're playing against a complete beginner, avoid this beginner mistake.

Build on your pairs - you can't score pung, chow or kong without first having a pair to start with.
